No Navy at launch, please.

[:1]In a recent episode of Cracked out mail bag, CT confirmed that their will be navies in KnCs. I would prefer this not happen.
Why?
The problem with navies, at least in Supcom and Supcom 2, is that they were never really developed properly.
In Supcom1, the navy suffered from never being cost effective, both in terms of mass and/or energy, as well as time; Battleships would take something like 8 minutes to build, and a nuclear sub around 12 minutes, IIRC. Further, there was never any real reason to control the seas in any way.
So why no navies in KnCs at launch? My reasoning is that, in order to properly balance and/or develop the navy, GPG needs to develop that section of the game as if it were a stand-alone game. Navies need their own map tiles (ex. Reefs, shallows), their own resources (and not just fish either, there could be small islands where gold or stone or trees would be- too small to build a base, but big enough to have an encampment of miners/etc) And a wide variety of units.
I'm not saying that KnCs shouldn't have a navy system, rather I'm saying that I want the navy to be developed fully, and released as an expansion, rather than have it developed poorly and in game at launch.
/prepares for a flamewar.|||Its a sound idea but the problem is the publisher, if it doesnt sell well there will be no expansion and no patches to even release the navy. On the other hand they would have things cut out for them and have more time to fine tune stuff. Mostly they will have to put it in regardless cause of the production cost and thinking ahead, also I really want to see that fish fortress.|||woepriest|||But then doesnt that seem like you are just buying half of the game and have to shell out more cash just to have the complete set. Its the same with the starcraft 2 campaign, forces you to buy 1/3 of the game and make the rest a non-stand alone expansion.|||There was no reason to ever control the seas in SC1?

lol, you're funny.|||sanman|||The only reason to build navy in Supcom2 is to prevent another player from shelling your base. It is not a viable strategy to go naval, most of the time, especially against aeon, who can annihilate a UEF navy in seconds.
To whomever said the SC2 campaign isnt enough, its atleast 3 times more content and fun than the Supreme Commander 2 campaign, and now I have 2 more equally fun games to look forward to. Thats fun.
I have mixed feelings towards a DLC navy. It seems like a good idea at start, but we dont want GPG to start with the dlc units, a la total war games.
I think that there should be navy at launch, but care should be put into making it balanced along with air and land. The trick with it is making it counterable with air or land, but not making it useless. Players shouldn't be forced to counter subs with more subs, they should have some other counter that can be reached with a different strategy.|||sanman|||I agree with pinguin. look at the amount of ships sup com had. the diversaty was far greater then in any other RTS I have ever seen. if they do naval the same as in FA I'm happy.|||What the hell.. put navy into it, pleases!. Aren't cool enough those ships catapulting fireballs on the coast?.|||I don't know if you recall, while you wrote all that, but there will be an extensive beta test..
Navy will not come out as something that doesn't belong at launch.. Don't worry!|||HighFlyer15|||If there would have been transport ships in supcom, navy would have been way more important, KnC will definately have that, transporting your troops might even be faster than walking them. Also maybe there will be fish in KnC which would be awesome IMO, I love navy and it should definately be in the game from start.|||I think that navies are great in some games, without navy battles will be much more slower and less fun.
I think air, ground and naval units are great combination in RTS games for hours of fun. :)
(And I agree with The_Silencer :?: )|||woepriest|||Yeah, right. As far as I know, we're all still diving into hypothetical waters. =)|||Fail thread is fail.|||Mr Pinguin|||Cutting out a major portion of the game at launch won't be good for the sales...
So yeah, have a beta, make sure everything is balanced as possible, and release balance patches after release?|||sanman|||Cybran Freedom Fighter|||I was the one that asked about the navies :D|||Land armies should be the main meal of knc, but naval/amphibious combat should be desert. Airborne combat would be the starters or appetisers.|||The_Silencer|||HighFlyer15
