A mapper whose maps have been downloaded 50000 times on the Vault alone.|||the Editor is 3D software, unless GPG aims to create its own 3D app there won't be that kind of Editor.
Mike|||I have no problem using a free 3D program like Blender if necessary and we have enough modders and experienced mappers who can learn to work with those tools and teach others. Some of us mappers got stuff working that were in no official map without any help. Two examples would be clouds and stuff and I got even animated decals in Aperture Laboratories.|||Then what your wanting is the Exporter for the Map format, which GPG may not even be able to release legally for various reasons, we'll have to wait and see.
Mike|||I would personly be far more likely to buy this if it has custom maps enabled, i loved making a map in Fa even if i did miss the boat by about three years.|||OrangeKnight|||Yup, that's the problem. for modding Notepad++ and lua knowledge alone can already go a far way, add an exporter and you are set up perfectly. Mapping needs a little bit more support unfortunately. I'm pretty sure that mapping tools can be provided with reasonable additional effort if you plan for them in early development. Creating a map editor after release will probably require a lot more effort. And you probably want to focus on bug fixing and balance at that point anyway.|||I hope you get your wish, Col.|||Thanks!
Even the unit Import/Exporters we got for SC1/FA were coeded by users who could understand model format code.
Mike|||licensing issues aside, offering a map editor will improve the longevity and popularity of any game.
I doubt selling extra DLC maps can in any way or form be more profitable than a bucketload of full game sales due to increased customer interest.
Anyhow please don't close the game, debugging, modding and all that is greatly appreciated user-side.|||Ghaleon|||I don't know how anyone in their right minds can or will justify the idea that it's ok for GPG to NOT include an map editor. It's a staple of every RTS game. Proprietary software or not, a RTS that does not support the creation and implementation of custom maps is like a lego set that can only be put together one way. CnC has it, blizzard games have it, and even Red Alert 1, which was made more than 10 years ago, has it. If GPG can't give us a full-featured map editor like blizzard because of licensing issues, at least give us the backbone, exporters, etc. and support for custom maps in the game.
Same thing goes with modding.
(Basically don't do what they did with SupCom2)|||I am looking forward to a map editor and modding tools, even if those tools come out months later.|||I don't care for reasons.
As a customer, it's my role to be demanding and want things from the people who are asking for my money. I want a map editor (or at least good support so the smart kids can get there with some help).
Reasons why they can't are all well and good.. but those reasons do absolutely nothing for my enjoyment or satisfaction with the product. There might be a perfectly good reason why Toyota built a bunch of cars with flawed acceleration systems, but those excuses don't change my needs and wants as a customer. If I can buy a car that won't drive me off a cliff and its features are otherwise comparable, then I'll choose the no-death-by-cliff car.
I want a map editor more than I want their fancy map design.
Seriously.. Some of the maps in SupCom2 are super cool.. but there are tons of custom maps for Forged Alliance that are flat-out gorgeous *and* awesome with a lot of subtle strategic nuances that make each one a fun and varied experience. Even the ugly custom maps for FA (which are clearly the vast majority, I admit) still have their charms, even if it's only a unique geography or Mex layout that hasn't been seen anywhere else.|||Tons? Yes, there are tons of crappy maps for SupCom/FA. And only a few gorgeous maps. Granted those few maps makes custom map support worth it :).
But I'd rather have, fancy, polished and high detailed maps from GPG rather than custom map support, if I had to choose.|||'Tons' is an imprecise word, I admit.. and you might even consider it an exaggeration. But it's all relative, so I'll just say that there are easily more than 20 total custom maps for FA that I consider both beautiful and fun to play on.
Part of that is just the strength of the SupCom/FA engine.. it makes for some attractive landscapes when you run it on high settings.. but then that's exactly my point. A good engine can be both attractive and accessible to modders/map designers.|||Map editor doesn't bother me too much.
