Please don't make a mistake of making a linear and strictly scripted SP campaign.
Although Starcraft 2 isn't released yet it is likely to set new standards in making RTS campaign that is both story driven and non-linear.
In the meantime Dark Crusade and SW: Empire At War offer good templates of how open-ended campaign is made. with greater detail and the strategic zoom concept this would be even greater, for example if you can have a strategic metamap in which you manage your empire.
There are many ways in doing this, each area having a story and quests trigger, the different sequence of conquest yields different results...
Anything is better than classic Warcraft 3 type campaigns where you feel like an observer with a slave leash on your neck.|||We'll see how linear SCII is truly gonna be but Empire at War and Dark Crusade featured some horrible ideas and way too much filler missions (same as with DoW II). Open-ended is fine as long as you can make every battle meaningful, not even the Total War games can manage that which is saying something.
Too linear isn't good either idd, you need one hell of a story and plot twists to keep it interesting then, like the original StarCraft and WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne did. WarCraft III? Wasn't that good storywise imo, way too many new characters not being memorable and such.|||You know what would be better?
Badass multiplayer.
Single player lasts a few hours - Multiplayer lasts for years.|||Obviously_Not_Toot|||CNC3:KW has a really interesting 'world domination' mode. IT provided a lot of single player fun. I would love to see something like that for 1v1 or, even better, multiplayer fun.|||I'd like campaigns like in the old Microprose games, such as Gunship, M1 Tank Platoon, or Red Storm Rising.
Semi-Story-driven, but with generated missions that affected the entire war.
Alternatively, have a look at Falcon 4.0's dynamic campaign.|||Yes, Kane's Wrath is another example besides Dark Crusade, such campaigns would be cheaper to make and you can spice them up with secondary objectives and other various condition like conquering sequence, time limits to make it far more replayable.
