Railroads for the Empire

Im sure alot of you have seen this picture already. It really has a nice feel to it, it seems like it would fit right in with K&C.

I was just thinking about how important railroads are in the steampunk universe and how some of us are hoping K&C will incorporate a little steampunk in game. We already see armored airships.
Would it be too much if the emipre had access to railroad technology late game? It could be something that would be built near a base as an upgrade to resource production and/or an upgraded way to transport large armies. Some of the primative steam powered trains look like they could fit in nicely with the art style of the airships we've seen.

I could envision the wheels larger with chains or spikes on them, alot of armor and a few engineers to operate them. There could be a few options for trailers. Enclosed transports allow infantry to travel quickly and safely protected from arrows, etc. Open flatbads could be used to allow archers to fire while on the move, but susceptible to return fire. There could be canon and ballista trailers.
I also thought it would be cool if the engine was volitale. Once the boiler reaches critical damage it would explode causing nearby damage and a cloud of steam. So protect your steam engines. :)
Just some ideas I had. Discuss if you wish.|||I would say no, since trains weren't invented till the 1800's..but zepplins weren't invented till the 1900's. So, it would fit fine.|||

It may, or may not have an Age of Empires economy. If it uses TA/FA economy, then railroads will have to find another use (rapid troop movement comes to mind), and if it does use and AoE economy, railroads would have to be REALLY fast to make up for the risk in having a line that brings you resources and can be negated by having one point destroyed.|||gameplaywise, i think railroads could be very interesting
mainly because i got no clue at all how it would work out. I like the idea of connecting various locations in my realm|||I think it would be interesting if one faction had railroads as a core mechanic, allowing fast troop movement from base to base and have their expanding rely on the railroads.|||Quote:|||They should have Dr. Brackman and the Cybrans gate in from the future as one of the factions....

Just kidding by the way|||Steam power was actually first invented by the greek/egyptians in Alexandria, but due to the low labour cost, it didn't take off.
as for the setting, megical fantasy medieval with a touch of renaissance technology and steam punk seems to be the style for the Empire.|||re1wind|||you could implement it very easy.
lets say the train functions like a trading cart in aoe2. you would build 2 trainstations and they would automaticly connect. you could build mutiple stations for a whole network of trains to connect all your settlements and outposts. they would be able to transport units from every station and automaticly generate gold trhough trade. you could even connect your railroad to that of your ally.|||sounds like you want to play Sim-City.|||played it, didn't like it that much. I prefer the other one, cities XL or something.|||Falcrack
