Imagine the implications of this for KnC

[:1]http://www.gametrailers.com/player/703080.html
Check out this video of a new game called "From Dust". Now imagine what it would be like if KnC maps had this kind of deformable terrain. Have units that can excavate terrain and wash your enemy's castle away by re-routing a river. Or surround your castle with lava flows.
Even just having maps this dynamic for an RTS would be incredible.|||That would be so awesome i cant even begin to describe how awesome it would be.|||No PC?!
I would have put up with UBI's draconian DRM and constant internet connection rubbish for that. HOLY CARP that looked amazing.|||Something this complex would require a major engine overhaul, so we're not going to see anything like it in KnC. Looks cool though.|||From Dust is coming out for PC, PS3, and XBOX 360. I cannot wait to get my hands on it, looks fun.|||I've played a game like this before, its called Popuolus
If you want terrain deformation, send the idea to cracked out, CT does actually read them, unlike here, where Sorian may read it, though its CT you want to send the idea to.|||Epic link to Populous is Epic.
...But that was a whole heck of a lot more sophisticated than Populous' 'physics' simulation.
@BM: OMG, when you first wrote that you would tolerate UBI's draconian DRM, I was prepared to reply, "No way.. No matter how cool the game, I'm completely boycotting them until they learn their lesson."
But then I watched the video.. and.. uh.. OMG. If draconian DRM is what it takes for devs/publishers to feel good about dumping all their money into products like that, maybe it'll be a good thing after all.. That stuff was just awesome.. Although it reminded me of the procedurally generated world and physics in Dwarf Fortress. :)|||I suspect this will be like the Neverwinter Nights 2 toolset. Very versatile and powerful, but things tend to look ugly unless your a graphics artist.|||OMG SEX. 8) Now we jsut need a spiritual successor to populous:The beginning. :D
Considering that the maps in knc are going in the direction of fixed tilesets, i doubt that the engine is actually capable of of that in realtime. supcom1/fa's terrain was deformable, but only through building. I did once bother to terraform a part of a map to block off entrance to my base, though. took time, but was funny.
having said that, giving wizards some spells that could create a fissure in the rock spewing lava out and burning the area around it would be...sadistically enjoyable.|||Looks very cool but only for a god game tbh. Things like resource values (mana for altering terrain) and AI would be a totally different story on changing maps like this. I don't see an RTS quickly adapting this kind of deformation into something balanced.
Some (collateral damage) deformation would be cool though.|||re1wind|||I definitely agree with your points, and the technology could definitely be used in a spiritual sequel to populous:The beginning. Which is one of the best and under-rated games ever. Also one of the funniest and most entertaining games i've ever played.
Populous: The beginning was a high-risk game where a single low-tier fireball could decimate a 100-man strong army when used properly. Not to mention lightning strikes, swamps, tornadoes, earthquakes, firestorms...and volcanoes...:3 Loosing half your population was annoying, but the "battle music" and chaos of a large battle was always always enjoyable. you lost? eh, you decimated the enemy and watch an awesome battle, who cares? ;D
